Rivierenbuurt - het gelijk van Berlage

Documentary, 1995, 64 min.

Documentary by the late Jan Wiegel about the Rivierenbuurt in South Amsterdam. This area is the centre of gravity of the South Plan, developed by the architect Berlage at the turn of the twentieth century. Jan Wiegel was born in 1929 in this area and spent his youth there. In World War II he saw the Germans move into the area and he witnessed their round-ups. Ever since, Berlage's wonderful façades have been partly hidden by a veil. A neighbourhood is more than just bricks and mortar. Sixty years later, Wiegel returned to the Rivierenbuurt. He looked at how the area, Berlage's plan, influenced him and talks to inhabitants including actors and the last mayor of Amsterdam.
