Rotterdam-Shanghai. Op Goed Geluk

Short documentary, 2008, 30 min.

Until 2004, Rotterdam was the largest port in the world. After that year, Shanghai outstripped Rotterdam. Both seaports attract adventurers. This documentary follows some of them.
The Huangpu River meanders between towering blocks of flats in Shanghai. The port is bustling, just like the provisional food stalls, including those of restaurateurs from Henan province. A young couple has exchanged their quiet life in the country for a hectic life in a congested city. It is tough, but some day they will live in a villa and there will be a car in the front. Meanwhile in Rotterdam, Moroccan stowaways are discovered. They are still teenagers. The immigration officers treat them well - to their amazement - but within 24 hours they are on their way back home again.
Episode from a five-part series of documentaries about Rotterdam and Shanghai. In a few felicitous sentences, the voice-over unfolds the heart of the matter. Split screens effectively show the contrasts and similarities between the two cities.
