Tegen mijn wil

Short documentary, 2002, 50 min.

Against her will, the 28-year-old Pakistani runaway Kubra went back home after extensive pleas by her family. Two weeks later, she was dead. Kubra became the victim of a murder of honour. Every year, around one thousand women are assassinated in Pakistan to save the family honour. Filmmaker Ayfer Ergün came across Kubra when she paid a visit to the Dastak refuge centre near Lahore. She filmed Kubra during her stay in the shelter and her first meeting with her relatives. Kubra refused to return, despite her sister's entreaties: 'You don't even have a brother. There is nobody who could kill you.' Through Kubra's story, Ergün depicts the hopeless plight of the other women in the relief centre. 'During life you are mistreated and when you're dead you are falsely accused.'
