To the outside world they look like one happy family. The truth, however, is rather different. Freek and Rianne have three, adopted childeren. Gilles (17) is of Belgian origin, Kim Su comes from China and Jorge (12) was born in Costa Rica. The problems deepen when Gilles, a rebellious teen-ager starts seeking for his roots. His natural father is still alive and it turns out he has two other sisters. This meeting with his past causes a split between Gilles and his adoptive parents. The situation escalates and not only affects Freek and Rianne but also the two other children, Kim Su secretly starts visiting a Chinese store manageress, who teaches her the Chinese language and culture. Freek, keeps trying to nip the conflicts in the bud but it is a hard and ungrateful task. Furthermore it is all at the expense of his health but he is the only one who knows.When he dies of a heart attack they all feel guilty.
