Weapon of War

Short documentary, 2009, 59 min.

As long as there are wars, armed men will rape women. Never before in history has this practice been as widespread and violent as in the Republic of the Congo. Over the past years, hundreds of thousands of girls and women suffered this fate and the numbers are still rising. This disrupts the entire country, because a woman who has been raped is given the cold shoulder. Only now, this crime receives international attention.
Weapon of War not only shows the victims of rape as a weapon of war, but also the perpetrators. Without any trimmings, both sides tell their stories. The graphic description by a former rebel does not need sensational footage to be bloodcurdling. Especially because the girl proceeds to tell her version of the story. The film also shows that the culprits often contend with posttraumatic stress disorder, which entails a security risk to the country. A chaplain tries to alter the soldiers' behaviour.
