Bokken en Geiten

Documentary, 1998, 94 min.

The peaceful façade of the Limburg village of Thorn has hidden a fierce fight for nearly 140 years. The picturesque village on the River Maas is torn apart by two music associations. The Royal Harmony (The Billies) and the Church Harmony (The Goats) are two bands that traditionally compete in such a fanatical way that the whole village is divided into two camps. The battle has also ensured that the two bands are so good that they often win prizes at national and international events.
In Billies and Goats, the filmmaker sets off to search for this passionate rivalry. During shooting, the boards of the bands withdrew their cooperation for fear of not being taken seriously. Hans Heijnen managed to persuade several individual members of the bands to cooperate, making it possible to show the divisions in the village sharply.
